The Day We Measured 200 Dreams

The courtyard of Ogo-Oluwa Primary School in Bariga buzzed with the kind of energy that only children can bring. Laughter, chatter, and the rhythmic scuff of bare feet on concrete filled the air as our SHINE Foundation volunteers unpacked tape measures, notebooks, and fabric samples. It was another day of our Dress Them Up, Lift Them Up outreach — but to us, it was much more than that.

As we moved from child to child, measuring shoulders, waists, and feet, we met pupils whose uniforms were torn beyond repair, shoes that barely held together, and some who had none at all. One boy stood quietly at the back of the queue. When it was his turn, he whispered, “Now I’ll look like the others.” His words hung in the air, simple yet profound — a reminder that dignity, not just access, is at the heart of education.

By the end of the day, we had measured 200 pupils. Every child was recorded, photographed, and fitted for a new uniform. But the real transformation was invisible — in the way they stood taller, smiled wider, and believed, even for a moment, that they were seen. We left tired but fulfilled, knowing that sometimes, changing a child’s future starts with something as small as a new shirt and a pair of shoes.
