Grace and the Green Bag

Grace is twelve, bright, and full of questions. She attends a public primary school in Oworonshoki and dreams of becoming a nurse. But until recently, she carried her books in a torn nylon bag — a daily reminder of what she didn’t have. She often hid it behind her desk, embarrassed to be seen.

During SHINE’s outreach visit, Grace received a brand-new backpack — green, sturdy, and big enough for her textbooks. When she slung it over her shoulders for the first time, her eyes widened, and her smile was radiant. “Now my books will be safe,” she said softly. What seemed like a small gesture to us meant the world to her.

Weeks later, her teacher shared that Grace had become one of the most organised pupils in her class. She began helping others tidy their books and mentoring younger pupils on keeping their school materials in good condition. The green bag, once a symbol of lack, became a source of pride and responsibility.

Grace’s story reminds us that empowerment often begins with the simplest of things — a backpack, a uniform, a kind word. At SHINE, we have learned that when a child carries dignity on their shoulders, learning becomes lighter, and the future feels closer.
