Our Work
Education is more than schooling — it is dignity, opportunity, and hope.
Explore SHINE programmes in Nigeria—from Dress Them Up, Lift Them Up to the Education Access Fund (4S), Dignity Kits for girls, and Advocacy & Research—designed to scale across Africa as partnerships grow.
At SHINE Foundation, we remove the barriers that keep learners from thriving, whether those barriers are material, financial, linguistic, or emotional. Our work focuses on creating pathways for every child and young person to learn with confidence, comfort, and pride.
Our Six Pillars
SHINE operates through six interconnected programme pillars that support learners across their academic journey — from the first day of school to graduation and beyond.
Each pillar reflects a dimension of what it means to learn, to belong, and to thrive. Together, they form the framework of our mission to make education holistic, inclusive, and transformative.
A. Learning for All
Promoting foundational literacy, multilingual learning, and inclusive classroom practices.
Language should open doors, not close them. In Nigeria, many children begin school in English — a language they may not speak at home. This creates an invisible barrier to learning that SHINE works to remove. We support learners who struggle with the language of instruction and champion education in the languages children understand best.
Initiatives include:
Mobile Libraries: Rotating community book hubs that nurture reading culture in underserved areas
Language Bridge: Multilingual learning support for pupils adapting to English-medium instruction
Mother Tongue Advocacy: Public awareness and policy engagement on the value of indigenous languages in education

B. Educational Equity

Providing resources and opportunities for students facing socio-economic barriers.
Access should never depend on wealth. SHINE creates pathways for learners from low-income backgrounds to succeed through financial aid, technology, and learning materials.
Initiatives include:
School Supply Drives: Annual campaigns providing backpacks, uniforms, and stationery to public-school pupils
SHINE Scholars: Financial aid and mentoring for high-potential, low-income students
Tech for All: Digital inclusion programme offering devices and training for secondary and tertiary students
C. Whole Learner Wellbeing
Recognising that learning flourishes only when children and young people are mentally and physically supported.
Education must feed both the body and the mind. SHINE promotes wellbeing through nutrition, mental health support, and creative expression.
Initiatives include:
SHINE Arts Collective: After-school creative arts sessions that foster confidence and self-expression
Breakfast Buddies: Nutritious meals for students at risk of hunger-related learning challenges
Mental Health Matters: Peer-led support and referral networks for students experiencing stress, anxiety, or trauma

D. Empowering Families and Communities

Equipping parents and communities to champion inclusive, high-quality education.
When families thrive, learners do too. SHINE works with parents and community partners to create supportive learning environments beyond the classroom.
Initiatives include:
Community Learning Hubs: Local centres offering tutoring, digital access, and workshops for students and parents
Parent Empowerment Sessions: Workshops on home learning, language support, and advocacy
E. Educator Support and Innovation
Building teacher capacity for inclusive, culturally responsive pedagogy.
Teachers are the heart of learning. SHINE invests in their growth through mentorship, peer collaboration, and training that values diversity and empathy.
Initiatives include:
Inclusive Pedagogy CPD: Training modules on multilingual teaching, trauma-informed care, and differentiated instruction (CPD: Continuing Professional Development)
Teacher Mentorship Programme: Peer learning and professional development support for early-career teachers

F. Advocacy and Research

Informing policy and amplifying learner voices through data, storytelling, and partnerships.
We turn evidence into action. SHINE engages policymakers, educators, and the public with insights drawn from our programmes and from the voices of learners themselves.
Initiatives include:
Policy Briefs & Research Reports: Advocacy grounded in field data and lived experience
SHINE Media Lab: Youth-led digital storytelling and podcasting platform
Impact Stories: Case studies and short films celebrating learner success
Together, these Six Pillars form the SHINE ecosystem — a model of education that is accessible, inclusive, and profoundly human.
Our Flagship Programmes
Through our flagship initiatives, we create the conditions for learners to learn with comfort, confidence, and pride — from the first day of primary school to the final year of university.
Programmes at a glance
1. SHINE Dress Them Up, Lift Them Up

Restoring dignity one uniform at a time.
Many children in public schools attend classes in worn-out or borrowed uniforms. This affects their confidence, belonging, and even attendance.
Through this programme, SHINE provides school uniforms, shoes, socks, and bags to pupils from low-income families — ensuring that every child arrives in class with self-respect and equal footing.
In 2025, with the generous support of the RHF Foundation, we are sponsoring 200 pupils across three Lagos schools. Each uniform is more than fabric; it is a statement that every learner matters.

2. SHINE Dignity Kits
Because periods shouldn’t end education.
Across Africa, many girls miss school due to a lack of access to menstrual products. The SHINE Dignity Kits programme provides reusable and disposable sanitary pads, soap, underwear, and menstrual health education, helping girls stay in school confidently and consistently.
We partner with local manufacturers to make these kits affordable, eco-friendly, and widely accessible.
Each Dignity Kit gives a girl two to three years of uninterrupted learning — and the confidence to focus on her dreams, not her challenges.

SHINE Scholars Support Scheme (4S)

Lifting those who lift others.
Many of our volunteers are also students who face the same struggles we aim to solve — tuition, rent, and medical bills. The SHINE Scholars Support Scheme (4S) provides structured educational and welfare support for these dedicated volunteers.
Through tuition awards, back-to-school grants, and emergency assistance, 4S ensures that no one who helps others to rise is left behind.
Beyond financial aid, recipients receive mentorship, leadership opportunities, and a platform to give back — building a cycle of compassion and empowerment within the SHINE family.

4. SHINE Academic Access Fund
Supporting students when it matters most.
Examinations are stressful — especially when a student cannot afford registration fees or materials. Our Academic Access Fund helps secondary and tertiary students meet these urgent needs so they can complete their academic year without interruption.
This small but powerful intervention has enabled dozens of students to sit critical exams and stay enrolled.
Because sometimes, the difference between success and setback is just one paid form.

How We Work
SHINE’s approach is holistic, inclusive, and community-centred. We work through schools, families, and local partners to identify learners most in need and provide support that addresses both access and agency — ensuring that education not only reaches learners but also empowers them.
Three principles guide our work:
- Equity — Prioritising those most marginalised
- Inclusion — Embracing linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity
- Dignity — Ensuring every learner feels seen, valued, and capable
